Blogging While Brown Day 2 Recap

Day 2 of the conference was wonderful with panels like “Talking Care of Ourselves Online: Yoga and Stress Relief Exercises for Social Media Users” and “Beyond Gossip, Hip Hop, and Politics: Bloggers as Change Agents and Educators”. An Unconference room was set up next door for continuing discussions and for those who wanted to hold their own panels. Lunch was great, healthy and delicious thanks to Politic265. I had a wonderful conversation during lunch with Nichelle (blogger, cupcake enthusiast and editor of Pepsi We Inspire) and Twanna a.k.a the Funky Brown Chick. I learn a few things about futbol and the World Cup.

Blogging is so more than just blogging and don’t plan on getting rich quick. I got to learn more about the FTC guidelines about advertising and promoting products on your blog. Plain and simple if you go to an event and one of their sponsor give you they product in hope that you write about on your blog, you must disclose this. Use a hashtag such has #sponsor or #ad when posting it on Twitter or Facebook. Another good panel was “32 Ways to Make Your Blog Suck Less” presented by Scott Hanselman. It was great follow up to the FTC discussion and he was funny. The most inspirational panel for me was “Break Through Bloggers”. It was great to see such passionate people talk about their journey. I am excited, got so many ideas in my head and can’t wait make it a reality. I got to meet a few people I wanted to connect with: @luvvueig, @mslejean, @glamazini, and @adriarichards.

Women were clearly represented, maybe about 75% of the room. Got to love it. I also loved that prior to the lunch break the twitter hashtag #bwb was the #4 top trending topic in DC and after lunch it rose to #2. It felt good to be apart of a positive trending topic on twitter. Goes to show people of color are blogging and are on the web. I can wait to start putting all things I learn from Blogging While Brown to good use. Next year the conference will be on LA and I have to be there.
