My 4th stop – #loosesummer with Loosecubes and Big Duck

Operation CoWork is a series in which I document my journey searching for an alternative place to work from outside of my home. Being self-employed and working from home seems like the best thing since slice bread and its all fun in the beginning. However, there come a time you may become stagnant and in need of a change. I have reach that point, follow me on my hunt for an solution.

As of July 11th, The Summer Coworking Challenge with Loosecubes has ended.

My #loosesummer journey ended with a trip the Dumbo area in Brooklyn. I had only been there maybe once or twice before. It fact the photos you see of me on this blog was taken not too far from where I ended up at. I worked at a place called Big Duck. Big Duck is a communication company that work with nonprofits organizations and they allow Loosecubers (like myself) to work there as well.

My day started off bad. We were having another heat wave and that day it was very hot. I hated the MTA that day. Where I had to pick up the second bus was actually the last stop on the route so I had to wait. If I knew then that I could have just hopped on the F train and took it the rest of the way but I was trying to avoid being underground on such a hot day. The NYC heat feels worst in the train stations.

Tired of waiting I decided to just walk, big mistake. Not want to pass out from a heat stoke I took my time and ended using my whole morning for commuting. I managed to get some work done though, had a new client consultation and several other phone calls.

The host Curtis was great. His warm welcoming really brought my spirits ups. The offices was very cool, another one that uses bright colors well. The Internet connection was great. The people were great. I know we are so used grey ugly cubicles in office space but if they would just splash the walls with some colors everything will get be great. Just like Big Duck. I just love their open layout design. The desk were I sat at was very comfortable.

I am bummed that I didn’t get a chance to walk around the neighborhood. With the commute begin the way it was I stop and brought lunch before Io got there. I would highly recommend you take a trip to visit Big Duck’s duck pond. You wont be disappointed. They are a fun group of people over there.

Cost of Coworking at Big Duck*: $4.50

Cost of running Operation CoWork (as of 6/29/12): $58.00

*As a part of the Loosecubes Summer Challenge, I was able to check out this location free of charge, so cost only includes transportation.
