If you build it they will come, but how would they know where to go. You have to tell them. When you have a side hustle or running a business full-time you need to tell people that you are open for business. How are your potential customers going to know what services and products you provide? Or know that you can a new site or radio talk show? Although most businesses hold typical operating hours, advertising can help your business earn potential income in those hours you are getting you’re much need rest.
For me I know that I can’t stay at my computer 24/7. I already wear glasses and need to hold on to the eyesight do have. My eyes need a break as well as my body. So this year I want to invest in my business in a way I haven’t been doing before. In 2011 I invested in webinars, twitter chats/parties, and conferences. All of which was great, I learned a lot and connected with wonderful people. I saw results but I know can see better results if I start maximizing all available avenues to me. One of those avenues is advertising (beyond word-of-mouth).
Everyone will probably agree with me in saying that word-of-mouth is one of the best and most cost-effective form of advertising both on and offline. I have to say that I have dropped the ball on both at some point. In the beginning I was using all of these fun guerilla-marketing techniques, then I stop doing it because I was getting referrals. Bad decision. When you find something that works for you, you have to keep doing it until something else comes along that will give you better results.
I am working on creating a strong advertising campaign for my business and you should too. From the research that I have done so far, I have learned that advertising does not have expensive and online advertising is still effective.
Here are a few things that I am doing:
1) Getting social again. I’ve been mia (missing in action) when it comes to the social networking sites. I still haven’t found a balance when to doing work and socializing on twitter and such. I will be a utilizing schedule tweet when I can’t be active.
2) I am going to ramp up my local buzz using guerrilla marketing. My favorite technique is putting flyers and business cards in book that are related to my business or something that my customers might pick up and read.
3) Banner advertising – one thing I haven’t tried before. Banner advertising is still very effective method if you do it right. Finding a site, blog or forum that cater to the audience your market may offer ad space that fit yours budget. You just have to do your homework.
The year is just getting start, so I am sure I would have plenty of updates about my advertising efforts further down line. While we are on the subject of banner advertising, creating web banners is one of the services I provide. Here are some example of banners I have design my clients.
