My new TV show obsession got me to thinking – can a lifestyle shift be beneficial to my online business? So what is the new obsession? It’s non other than Tiny House Nation on the FYI channel, which one of the sister channels to A&E. I caught a marathon of the show one weekend and been hooked ever since. The show Tiny House Nation documents people who want some sort of freedom. Whether it’s from paying a mortgage, freedom to travel, bringing their family closer together, etc. all with the added benefit of living in a home that they own outright.
The majority of the houses are built on trailers that will be hood up to a truck to make it mobile. There are times where they are built on foundation like your traditional house. There two hosts – Zack, both an Tiny Home owner himself and expert contractor take care of the construction of these homes with a team and then John help the new home owner prepare for tiny living. That is my favorite part, watching John explain to the people that they cannot take all of their stuff with them.
So the show got me thinking – can the Minimalist lifestyle and running an online business work together?
I believe so. I am definitely not getting a house on wheels. You need a certain driver license, a certain type of vehicle to move the house around, and more. If anything I would do one that was build on a foundation but my bedroom can’t be a loft. The show isn’t for first time I heard about minimalism. I first heard about the minimalist lifestyle by reading Rosetta Thurman’s journey on her blog happyblackwoman.com.
She was able to travel to different places, plus live and work her business from Hawaii for a couple of years. Now how great is that? I think it’s amazing and therefore I am challenging myself to learn how to live with less to experience more in hope to that I can truly work from anywhere I please.
Minimalism – why now?
I feel that the only thing that is missing from my life and business is being able to truly work from wherever I want. I know for the fact I hate living on the northern part of the east coast during the winter months. Plus I haven’t been traveling as much as I used to. Besides a few family events I haven’t gone much of anywhere in the last couple of years.
So it’s time to make some changes. Between watching Tiny House Nation and YouTube videos on the subject I have learned a few things, which I have already started adding into my life.
Beginner Tips for Minimalist Newbies
- Downsize your belongings. Make three different piles, things you want to keep, donate and trash. Things you are going to keep should be put back and out of the way. Donations should be move closer to your front door while the trash should go out right away. Everything you are going to keep has to have a place. This will allow for a less clutter space.
- If you have any items that are in still good condition you may want to try selling them. Check out eBay, Amazon, Craigslist and the multiple apps such “Let Go” & “Offer Up” to make a extra couple of bucks.
- There’s no right or wrong way to be a minimalist. Everyone situation is different but it is a lifestyle.
- Have items on your life that have multiple functions.
What do you think about the minimalist lifestyle?
I just love the creativity in the furniture that Zack creates on the show. He is really great at his craft. Anyway I hope to take you along my journey of building my best flexible business and life that I truly love. Now, it’s your turn. Let me know your thoughts on the subject?
