About two weekends ago I got the coolest invitation ever (thank Duncan!), an opportunity to check out a print shop. Now I check out a few print shops to get quotes for possible projects. That was basically going in, asking a few questions, and getting samples. I always wondered what goes on behind the counter? How do print shops crank out their jobs on a daily basis? What is the work environment like? Well I got the answers to those questions and more. Last week Monday I got the coolest chance to walk behind the counter of a print shop and see where all of the magic happens. I was totally blow away just looking at some of the sample business card jobs they have done. I love that they have bins of cards so customers can not only get a feel of what they can do but some ideas for they own cards.
I got a tour of the place and saw several of their printers. They also have several different choices of paper stock. The best part was seeing how a print job is done on the big machines. The machines are way better than your typical home or office printer. It was also nice to hear that designers aren’t alone when it comes to feeling the pressure when it comes giving the client want they want. However, at the end of the day there’s nothing better than finishing the job and making the client/customer happy. I even got a lesson in the art of getting that perfect shade of ink color.
I can’t forget to mention that I got to see a letterpress machine. How cool is that? There’s not that many left and are usually only use for that special job. Such has wedding invitations. I was on a geek high when I left the print shop and was definitely inspired. I can’t wait to redesign my own business cards and have then print up.
