I have to admit I am a bit of a perfectionist and at times it has affected my process. It does not matter what I am working on everything gets affected. It’s no fun when I get a creative block. I get extremely frustrated and unproductive. And it always happens at the worst time. For example when I am working on a project with a tight deadline. I hate that. However, through the years I have figured out some ways to break through that block and get back to that creative state of mind I love so much. So if you find yourself banging your head against your desk or wall try these four tips out for size.
Tip #1 Work from a different location
If you have a set workspace in your home, set up shop someplace else. Try working on the floor in your living room. Or if working indoors is the problem, go to the park. Changing up your location can help refresh your mind and give you a different perspective. Don’t forget to research places to see if they have Wi-Fi, outlets or anything else you need to be productive.
Tip #2 Keep an idea notebook
Sometimes you get hit with inspiration and you are not able to focus on it right then. With your mind juggling so many things, you may forget some your brilliant ideas. So having a place to write them down will be a great habit to get into. Then when you are having a creative block you can go back and read your notes and see if one of them is a solution to your current problem.
Tip #3 Work on something else
Take a look at your to-do list and determine what you can get done in a short amount of time. Let’s get those smaller tasks done and off your plate. Completing that will give you more confident to tackle the harder tasks.
Tip #4 Take a break
Step away from whatever you’re working on. Just take a few minutes. You may want to play a game, exercise, or even try some meditation. Do something to get your brain thinking about anything other than what you are working on. You may even need a day or two away from your problem. Trying to force yourself to continue to work when nothing seem to be working will just lead to more frustrations.
Trust me, I been there. I had my fair share of blocks of all kind. Two things that I always have to remind myself are that it won’t last forever and to never give up. Now I want to hear from you.
