There are tons of social media platforms out there today and there will be more popping up in the future. For those of us using social media to either build a business, choosing which one can be overwhelming. If Instagram isn’t your thing, wouldn’t hurt to create an account to secure your name for branding’s sake. However, if Instagram is your choice here’s how to get your first 100 followers. Why 100? It’s a very magical number and I will tell you why soon.
Getting Started with Instagram
You are going to need a few things – a profile pic, bio, and link. Try and make sure the photo you use is the same across all of your profiles. This is for brand consistency and it makes it easier for people to find you, especially if they have already connected with you elsewhere. Instagram only allows one link. You can add your website (or a special welcome page on your site), opt-in offer or use a third-party that will allow you to showcase multiple links. // See screenshots below for examples
My personal preference is to use my own website because I want all the traffic. Using a tool like Linktr.ee drives traffic to their site, then to your site. Plus some of these apps have been known to go down just like IG and FB does.
As far as your bio goes, this is where you are going to have to get a little creative. There is a character limit of 150 but may sure you tell people who you are and what you do (do as I say and not as I do – I’m working on fixing my bio). Once you have these basic things in place, you have two options. The first is to use Instagram as is and the other is to switch your page to a business page.
How To Turn Your Page Into A Business Profile (completely optional)
You will need a Facebook account to create a Facebook page. That Facebook page is what you need to switch a personal IG account to a business one. Why would you want to switch to a business profile? It will give you analytics directly from your account via the Insights which can help you later.
When you make the switch, you can see some stats about your page. However, once you get your first 100 followers on Instagram, you get access to more such as demographics. This is very helpful because it will tell you everything from sex (male vs. female), age, location, and most importantly which days and hours your followers are most active. // See screenshots below for examples

Hashtags & Instagram
To get more eyes on your posts and just your page in general, you should get in the habit of using hashtags. A hashtag is a word or a combination of words that you add to your post to make it more searchable. Currently you are allowed to add up to 30 on a single post. Now there are some debates as to where you should put your hashtags.
Some people say you should put them in your caption, while others say to add them as a comment. I have found that both work.
Everyone ask how often should I post. Advice on this varies and this is why I think you should knock out your first 100 followers as quickly as possible (and not by buying – that’s a BIG NO NO!!!). Those stats about the days and times that your followers are the most active is going to help you to know when to post and how often you should post.
More last thing…
This last piece of advice I cannot stress enough. It’s the one thing I wasn’t doing and that’s why it took me so long to get my first 100 followers. Set aside at least 20-30 minutes a day or 2-3 times a week to network. Go and (1) follow new people, (2) like posts/images and (3) comment.
Please leave relevant comments and nothing like “hey follow me”, “like my pic”, or just a random emoji. Real engagement is going to help you in the long run to gain more followers that will be interested in what you have to say and sell.
