Since I am being totally open and honest with you, I will admit that I made some very big mistakes in my earlier years of being my own boss. These mistakes have cost me a whole lot but they have also made me so much wiser, stronger, and more confident in not only myself but also the skills I have. By sharing them with you, I hope that I can help you avoid making the same ones or at the very least not make any that will cost you too much.
Stop procrastinating but don’t move too fast.
I was so focused on finishing school that I totally neglected my design portfolio. I didn’t get that in order until I got word that I was being let go from my job. So that last week I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I needed to buy a portfolio case, figure out what pieces I was going to showcase, plus get it all printed out and put together.
Luckily prior to that my manger had encouraged me to go ahead and purchase the design software I needed so I could keep practicing and learning outside of work. I spend over $2000 but it was worth the investment. Since then it what I use to do design work for my clients as well as myself. I don’t know what I would have done if I had to rely on “free trials” of the design software.
Back then there wasn’t anything like Canva available. How would it look if I told a client, my 30-day trial is up and I couldn’t finish their work? Procrastination is the number one mistake people make when it comes to following their passion. We keep putting things on the back burner saying I will get to it one day. Or you keep telling yourself I need this or that before I can began.
Excuses, Excuses and even more excuses.
So what are you so worry about – the risk? That’s why you are freelancing. Make it your side hustle, so you can test the waters and see if this is really want you want to do. Remember slow and steady always win the race. Which bring me to lesson number two.
