I’ve been an admiring Rosetta’s journey of living a minimalist lifestyle (Creator of the Happy Black Woman Blog). The biggest inspiration was the fact she was able to let go of a lot of things and easily downsize. I think we like to hold on to way too many things because of memories. So I finally decided to do something similar. Since the Spring/Summer season is over, having a physical yard sale is out the question but I can always do one online. I sold stuff online before, like books and electronics but I haven’t done so in a long time. This isn’t the first time this year I thought about selling online, I sign up for an eBay account back in January and never use it.
So two weeks ago I logged on to Craiglist. I search the ads already posted to see how others worded their ads and in a few minutes I had several up and rolling for myself. Two days went by and nothing happened except for some spam replies.
Lesson 1: Be careful when replying to the responses to your Craigslist ads. Once you reply to a spam email you will be place on a list and start received tons of spam. There isn’t a way to report the spam emails on Craigslist at this time.
Lesson learned, I now read and delete anything that comes off as spam. When I didn’t get any real responses from Craiglist, I went to eBay and what you know I got my first sale within a day. Soon after that I got a sale on Craigslist. So in two weeks I was able to sell several items and make $17.
Lesson 2: Be flexible with your pricing. Try to sell items in person to avoid shipping costs.
I preferred to sell everything in person. I would like to avoid shipping costs. I haven’t figured out how to calculated the shipping and what items I should have as free shipping or have the buyer paid for it. My goal is to move things fast. However, it’s really not about the money so much as it’s about, letting go of things that I just have sitting around. For example I been telling myself I am going to get in scrapbooking for the past three years and I haven’t made a move yet. If and when I do, I can always go to Michael’s and pick up supplies. Plus by then there will be new styles, techniques, tools, etc. for me to choose from.
I still have more belongings to go through. Some will be given to friends and the rest donated. My hope is by eliminating the extra stuff it will have positive effects in other areas of my life.
