Goodbye June. Hello July. The first half of the year is officially over and you know what that means right? Yes, we have only 6 months to prepare for 2013. If its one thing that I learned from being in business for myself is that you must plan and plan ahead. So that is what I did this weekend. I figured out what I made the first 6 months, how far I have to go until I reach my yearly revenue goal, and what I need to do to make sure I reach it. You have to know where you are at in order to know where you are going. I am proud to say that despite a small setback in the end of 2011/start of 2012, I have made great progress.
I have learned to spot the “red flags” far in advance, the jobs that are not a right fit for my business. I now have a clear picture of who my target is and who I love to work with. Of course I would love to help everyone but after awhile you figure out what personalities you gel better with. This all make for an better working experiences and I won’t end up feeling burned out.
I also successfully add the word “No” to my vocabulary. I’m no longer afraid of saying “No, that’s not what I do” or “No, I longer offer those type of services”. Both has been tricky because I still hate to turn down an opportunities to work with someone but I must free myself up for things I really enjoy doing. Plus I am working a list of subcontractors that can I refer those clients to.
I can’t forget to mention my newly favorite, “No, I can’t work for that small amount but here’s what I can offer you.” My design sales will be few and far in between, unless I am launching a new service or increasing the price of a current one. The testing I been doing over the last year and half allowed me to see when I should do them and who I should target. So here’s a heads up for those of you in need of web design work done, there will be a Back to School/Back to Business Special in September for a very limited time only.
On the other side of business, my Coworking experiment in which I look for a place to call home of my business outside of my home, is coming along very nicely. Be on the lookout for blog posts about my recent experience working at REV, Greenpoint Coworking, and Big Duck. As well as a special opportunity that came my way which started today. If you follow me on Foursquare, Instagram and/or Twitter you may be able to put it together. I’ve only told my brother, best friend and another friend. I won’t talk in detail about it until the end of the month. Well I need to get back to work but make sure you come back tomorrow when I look back on the last 6 months of my blogging journey.
Now it’s your turn. How did the first half of 2012 treat you and your business? What are you plans for 2013? Let me know in the comment section below.
