Over this past year, I’ve been on the hunt for either a WordPress plugin or app that would help me with a very important area of my business. I needed a way for clients to schedule calls with me without the back and worth of emails. So I was super excited to learn that Square had a solution. For those of you who are looking for the same thing, I’m going to review the Square Appointments App (referral link).
First, let me tell you a quick story. One of the best decisions I ever made was to use a scheduling tools for all client calls during my time running my first business – a boutique web design business. I experienced upset clients when I didn’t answer their calls as well as missed calls because of miscommunication of time zones.
I had found an app called Tungle.me and it was only available for BlackBerry and iPhone. That’s how long ago this was. It was purchase by Rim (BlackBerry) but never release the Android version. Shortly afterwards, the app was closed down in 2012. Since then I had to rely on free WordPress plugins but nothing worked as good.
Let’s fast forward until now. When I first learn about the Square App is was just a payment processing tool. (Not to be confused with SquareSpace which is the website builder) Now you can run and I do mean run your business with Square.
Review of Square Appointments App
For the last couple of months I’ve been testing out the app. I think Square Appointments (referral link) was created with service-based business in mind, like Hair Stylists/Barbers, Coaches, Consultants, etc. Basically any one who need to allow others to schedule time with them. It allows you to set up landing page that you can share so anyone who need to can book you or your team for the services you offer.
I like to start with the bad first. I really don’t have anything bad to say about this app though. I’ve seen other reviews online and they have so many cons but my experience has been different. Here’s what you need to know. Square have several apps in the Apple App Store (also available for Androids). I only have Appointments and Invoices downloaded to my iPhone.
With the Appointments app (referral link), I can access my calendar of bookings. I can handle transactions for my services, monitor my money, and create invoices. What I can not do (as of the writing of this post) create estimates for my invoices. This is why I have downloaded the Invoices App and now I can do everything from my phone.
A big thumbs up for me, is not that I can use the app for free but I can sync my bookings with my Google Calendar. I can set up my availability within the app, block off time in my google calendar when I need to and it will block that same time in the app so no one can book during that period. You can set your services to free or add a cost which will require and allow your clients to pay at the time of their booking.
A couple of weeks ago Square introduced Square Assistant which send automated text messages to your clients when they book. So they will get a confirmation text message when the booking is confirmed as well as when they reschedule which they can do on their own. However, the most important feature is that a client can view everything in their time zone so there is no confusion.
Cost of doing Business with Square Appointments
Pricing is based on the number of staff members* you have. If you are like myself and are a team of 1 then we get to use the service with no monthly fee. However, this doesn’t mean everything is free.
- For Individuals: Free and 2.6% + 10¢ dip, tap, and swipe processing rate
- 2 – 5 Staff Members: $50 per month and 2.5% + 10¢ dip, tap, and swipe processing rate
- 6 – 11 Staff Members: $90 per month and 2.5% + 10¢ dip, tap, and swipe processing rate
*staff members means who need access to the account to run it
So is the Square Appointment App worth using? Yes, it’s 2019 and ain’t nobody got time to be wasting on meaningless tasks. I think Square Appointments (referral link) it a great solution for solo-preneurs and small businesses who provide services. You can set up everything online but also manage it from your mobile devices with the Apps.
Remember, I kept it simple with just the Appointment and Invoices Square Apps. I use the desktop version too and everything has been working great for me.
