Have you ever tried emailing a file or multiple files but it was too large to send? Then you probably try zipping (or archiving) them but it was still too big to send.
Back in the day we would have had to put those files on a floppy (not the big floppy but the compact ones, lol) or burned it to a CD/DVD and hand it off to the client.
Now with many computer manufacturers doing away with the built in CD drive, we need an alternative way to transfer large files. This is where the cloud comes in and one cloud-based tool that I love to use is Dropbox (affiliate link).
What is Dropbox?
Dropbox is an online tool that allows you to store your files in the cloud. You can use it to back up your computer and even all of the photos from your phone or tablet. It’s a great way to free up space on your phone, especially if you take a lot of photos.
My favorite thing to do with Dropbox (affiliate link) is to share files and there is two ways to do it. Method number 1 is sharing a folder with another Dropbox user. Both of you can drop files in that folder and have access to it on your individual devices.
Method number 2 is sharing a link. For example, one of the services I provide as Virtual Assistant is backing up my client’s WordPress sites. Once I have all of the files downloaded to my computer, I organize them into folders and create a zip file.
That zip file is uploaded to a folder on my DropBox account that is dedicated to that particular client. I can then share a link to that file for them to download to their computer. No more struggling trying to email files.
So how much does this cost?
As a part of Startup Biz Tool series on this blog, everything I am sharing is all about low cost tips and tools. I am going to recommend that you start off with their 2GB Basic account, which is free.
Their paid accounts start at $9.99 and you get 1TB (1,000 GB) of space as well as more features. Dropbox works on both PCs and Macs. There are even apps available Apple devices, Android and Kindle Fire.
When you invite your clients to use Dropbox (affiliate link) through your referral link (they must sign up and download the app to their computer or device for it to count), then you both get 250 MB of bonus space.
So it’s a win-win situation. And of course once you outgrow your free account you can always upgrade to a Pro or Business account. Now get to backing up those files!
