Friday Twitter announce that it had suspended two of the most popular third-party Twitter Apps for violating their Policy. According to the UberMedia website they have 3 million users Tweeting from at least 1 of their Twitter Apps: UberSocial (formerly known as UberTwitter for BlackBerry & iPhone) Twidroyd (for Android), Echofon (for iPhone), and UberCurrent (for iPhone). Fans of the two banned apps, UberTwitter & Twidroyd were in an uproar. Twitter suggested that users switch to the official Twitter Apps: Twitter for BlackBerry/iPhone/Android.
Later on UberMedia Tweeted that they made changes and were waiting Twitter’s approval. As I write this Twitter has yet to reactivate the new UberSocial and new version of Twidroyd.
The main reason for the suspension was the used of the trademark. According to the guidelines set forth by Twitter you can not use Twitter in the name of your website or application. The name UberTwitter is clearly a violation. There were other reasons such changing content of users tweet in order to make money and privacy issue with private direct messages longer than 140 characters. UberMedia say that this is not true and has remove any features that may cause problems.
I understand Twitter position but I still love
Ubertwitter UberSocial. Although I use SocialScope as well. Bottom line you can not mess with trademarks or u will pay the cost. I am pretty sure UberMedia was notified previously, they probably weren’t moving fast enough for Twitter Legal team. I personally knew about that those guidelines because I remember reading up on it. I want to make sure when I use their logo I was using it correctly. We all have to play by their rules.
I can’t wait until the re-approval of UberSocial. If you can’t and have decided to just move on, check out: HootSuite, TweetDeck, and SocialScope to just name a few.
